The “5 Oceans” Program: Educating to Better Protect

Sensitive to environmental challenges, Eqwal Foundation wanted to work alongside the association Coco an Dlo through its various missions. As part of the 5 Oceans project, led by Coco an Dlo and supported by Eqwal Foundation, initiatives for raising awareness, educating young people, and protecting the marine environment have been carried out within local communities.

The Coco an Dlo Association

Created in 2019 by Dalila Essediri and Coralie Balmy, the association Coco an Dlo was founded to promote environmental awareness. It implements actions focused on education, mediation, and the promotion of local initiatives. The founders chose to carry out their public-interest missions specifically within island territories.

The 5 Oceans Project Supported by Eqwal Foundation

This program aims to create an environmental education pathway for children attending schools in island regions. Its ambition is to help them better understand their ecosystem, strengthen their connection to their territory, and ultimately encourage them to become committed actors in its preservation.
To ensure that these lessons have a lasting impact, the program is built around three major pillars: awareness, transmission, and cooperation.

The project is already underway. It unfolds through class-to-class exchanges via videoconference, the provision of tailored educational resources, and the showcasing of students’ initiatives and creations. A range of activities focused on the sea, land, and local culture allows children to explore their environment, understand the challenges surrounding it, and grasp its full importance.

An initial action took place in early October on the atoll of Fakarava, in French Polynesia. The teams met with the mayor, local officials, and the entire educational community to officially launch the program. On this occasion, a class from Fakarava was paired with a class in Martinique to establish a year-long correspondence. This initiative will give students the opportunity to discover each other’s environments and cultures, while uniting around a common goal: protecting the oceans and the ecosystems that connect their territories.

Through this program, Eqwal reaffirms its human values and its commitment to protecting the environment and island territories. By placing the younger generation at the heart of ocean preservation, this project helps shape today the responsible and engaged actors of tomorrow.
