Eqwal Foundation - Mission in Jordan with MSF Foundation

From May 8 to 16, 2025, a mission took place in Amman, Jordan. Jugen D’Hont, an orthoprosthetist at Eqwal in Belgium, and the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) foundation traveled there to provide medical assistance in a region where current conditions are challenging.

Week overview

The week was organized and efficient, as time had to be optimized to cover as many topics as possible.
The meeting began with informal discussions aimed at defining the project’s scope and ambitions.
The mission continued with patient visits, exploration of 3D solutions, tests and comparisons of digital scanners in the field, examination of various design processes (Meshmixer, Noe, and Cube), decision-making on materials and thicknesses used, as well as the fabrication and design of 3D devices, etc.
In the final part of the mission, Jugen and the on-site teams discussed digitization, 3D correction, and printing. These discussions led to conclusions about the challenges faced, the solutions provided, and perspectives for the future.

Results…

Significant progress was made in research on the implementation of orthopedic devices, particularly modular ones, thanks to 3D printing. This work produced promising and encouraging results, including a ready-to-use WHO solution, two functional transfemoral sockets, one AFO (ankle-foot orthosis) still to be printed, a conceptual AFO, and a conceptual postoperative stabilizing knee brace.

The MSF Foundation

This work would not have been possible without the support of the MSF Foundation, which fights daily to provide medical aid in regions facing hardship. The Amman hospital and its MSF reconstructive surgery program specialize in treating burns and facial reconstruction. Overall, they focus on patient rehabilitation and care, facial mask digitization and production, forearm prosthesis fabrication, etc.

This mission successfully tested innovative orthopedic solutions, such as 3D printing and digital design. Thanks to the collaboration between Eqwal Foundation and the MSF Foundation, promising devices were created, opening new perspectives to improve access to care in complex contexts.
