Humanitarian mission in Thailand: Transforming lives through prosthetics
In the heart of exotic Thailand, a team of three orthoprosthetists and a workshop technician have embarked on a new humanitarian mission thanks to the Eqwal Foundation.
A new workshop for a new start
Organised by the Eqwal Foundation, this initiative is the third in Thailand. After the first two missions to Mae Sot, this new mission has been organised in Mae Hong Son, in the north-west of Thailand.
For this new humanitarian project, we had to start from scratch and set up a new workshop to train the teams on site. Machines, tools and equipment were ordered and brought back from our agencies to equip this new workspace. Far from the infrastructures we are familiar with in our agencies, the team on site had to adapt and find solutions to make this workshop suitable for patient care.
Sharing knowledge and skills
During this mission, Caroline, Lynzy, Danny and Paul provided much more than just prostheses and medical equipment. Before our teams arrived in Thailand, the trainees were able to take advantage of video training sessions. The mission began with a day of intensive theoretical training, during which our orthopaedic surgeons shared their expertise with local trainees. Once the week's programme had been drawn up, they were able to start taking measurements and moulds on the ten or so patients.
A mission accomplished
After various stages, the patients were finally able to test their prostheses. And after a few adjustments, they were all able to leave with a level of walking comfort that they could not find in their old prostheses, which were often very rigid.
We're proud of the work that's been done and to see these patients so happy to be able to try out their prostheses. Our staff really appreciated the job, as did the trainees, who we hope will continue to fit many more patients.
