Two weeks of humanitarian missions in Thailand for our volunteers

Two weeks of humanitarian missions in Mae Sot, Thailand, have just concluded for our teams of orthotists, prosthetists, and workshop technicians. These efforts took place in the workshop we established nearly two years ago, a space dedicated to training and supporting local professionals.

First Mission: Knowledge Transfer

The first week was led by Keith, Paul, Lindsey, and Carl, four orthotists and workshop technicians from our agencies in the United Kingdom. Their primary mission was to strengthen the skills acquired during previous missions and solidify the foundations for optimal patient care.

During the initial days, our teams revisited the basics with the trainees on site. Topics such as plaster casting, an essential skill in prosthetic fabrication, were covered.

They then moved on to practical applications, including plaster preparation, adjustments to ensure an optimal fit, and socket preparation for various patients. Precision, patience, and attention to detail were key during these stages to ensure patient comfort.

By the fifth day of the mission, the first patients were able to take their initial steps—a moment of pride for the trainees as well as our four volunteers.

Second Mission: From Training to Autonomy

The second week began with a handover day between the two teams. This is when James, Dave, Jason, and Paul took over. Their objective was to continue the work initiated and guide the trainees through the next stages.

Thanks to a smooth transition between our volunteers from the United Kingdom and the United States, the team was able to finalize adjustments and casts and support patients through the final stages of rehabilitation. This collaboration between the two teams enhanced efficiency and ensured comprehensive patient care.

We are proud of the work accomplished by everyone involved, from the volunteers who provided exceptional training to the trainees and all those who contributed to the success of these five missions. We look forward to continuing this wonderful journey in Thailand and beyond, always with the motivation to support patients worldwide.
